Steve Stoute x Morning Joe
Steve Stoute appeared on Morning Joe Monday morning to promote and discuss his book The Tanning of America. I really need to go and buy this book. I’ve been meaning to do so for a minute now, but I’ve been poor. Don’t judge me. Lol.
The moment where he describes Jay at Carnegie Hall is pretty on target:
“Of all the things that took place, when Jay-Z sang ‘Juicy’ and just held the mic out into the crowd and they sang in unison…Wow!,” said Stoute. “This is Carnegie Hall, this is Jay-Z, he gave it up to Biggie and the crowd went for it. I just thought that this is a tanning moment. It shows how far we’ve come as a society… Music played a part in it but it was more than that, everyone was culturally there. Everyone knew the words and mannerisms as if they’d all watched the music video together”.
Yeah. That does say a lot considering that, as they mentioned, the vast majority of the people in the audience were rich white folk. That speaks to not only how hip-hop has transcended culturally, but class wise as well.
